The younger boy sits on the ground holding a red squirrel (either a tame pet or a stuffed toy). His faithful dog lies next to him. The older boy rides an impressive hobby horse on a pole with a wooden base. The younger boy is wearing the typical checked dress which small boys often wore at this time.
The frame is somewhat later than the painting but still antique.
